What Is Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT)?

SRT is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, offering patients a safe, painless, and highly effective alternative to surgery. Unlike traditional radiation, GentleCure® Image-Guided SRT uses low-dose X-ray energy with real-time ultrasound imaging to precisely target and eliminate cancerous tissue while preserving the surrounding healthy skin.

Gold Standard Recognition

Leading dermatologists now consider Image-Guided SRT just as effective as surgery—and in many cases, a gentler first-line option.

Why Patients Choose GentleCure® SRT Over Surgery

No Cutting, No Scarring

Skip the scalpel. This treatment offers complete cancer removal without stitches, scars, or the need for reconstructive surgery.

Outstanding Cosmetic Results

Because there’s no cutting involved, GentleCure® is the preferred choice for treating cancers on cosmetically sensitive areas like the nose, ears, eyelids, or lips.

Covered by Insurance

GentleCure® is covered by Medicare and most private insurers, with financial assistance available if needed.

Step 1: Imaging the Tumor

Using a handheld ultrasound imaging wand, Dr. Rapaport pinpoints the exact size, shape, and depth of the cancer. This real-time image appears on-screen to see the tumor before treatment even begins.

Step 2: Personalized Dose Calculation

Based on the detailed imaging, Dr. Rapaport calculates a custom dose tailored to the exact contours of the tumor. This ensures that only the cancerous tissue is targeted, not the healthy skin around it.

Step 3: Precision Delivery of Radiation

Once the treatment area is defined, the SRT device gently delivers the therapeutic X-rays directly to the site. The energy penetrates just below the skin's surface to safely eliminate cancer cells.

Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments

At each session, imaging is repeated to track progress. This allows Dr. Rapaport to make real-time adjustments to the treatment plan if needed, ensuring complete cancer clearance while preserving the surrounding tissue.

What Conditions Can Superficial Radiation Therapy Treat?

GentleCure® (Image-Guided SRT) is clinically proven to treat:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
  • Early-stage, nonmelanoma skin cancers
  • Keloid scars (in select cases)

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with skin cancer or are concerned about a suspicious lesion, schedule an appointment today. Dr. Jeffrey Rapaport, board-certified dermatologist and recognized authority in medical dermatology, will personally evaluate your condition and help you determine the safest, most effective treatment for your needs.

The GentleCure® Process

1. Before Treatment

Your journey begins with a personalized consultation with Dr. Rapaport. He’ll review your pathology report, explain your treatment options, and develop a custom plan that aligns with your medical needs and personal preferences.

2. During Treatment

You’ll be seated comfortably as ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area. A real-time scan reveals the tumor on screen. Once the dose is calculated, the device is positioned to deliver treatment directly to the site. Sessions are quick, painless, and only 15 minutes long. You’ll return several times a week for 4–7 weeks until the cancer is fully treated.

3. After Treatment

There is no downtime required. Some patients experience mild redness, swelling, or skin changes, which resolve in a few weeks. No scars, no need for surgery, and no interruption to your daily routine.

Results Timeline

With each session, both visible and beneath-the-surface cancer cells diminish. Imaging confirms when the tumor is fully gone. Most patients complete treatment in under two months and maintain results long-term with no recurrence at the treatment site.

Is Superficial Radiation Therapy Right for Me?

If you’ve been diagnosed with a nonmelanoma skin cancer and are seeking a gentler alternative to surgery, GentleCure® SRT may be right for you. This treatment is ideal for:

  • Patients with basal or squamous cell carcinoma
  • Those who want to avoid surgical scars, particularly on the face or ears
  • Older adults or patients with underlying medical conditions that increase surgical risk

Dr. Rapaport will review your pathology report and medical history in detail to determine if GentleCure® is the most appropriate treatment for your case.

Questions? We’ve Got Answers!

How many GentleCure® SRT sessions will I need?

Most patients require treatment 3 to 5 times per week for 4 to 7 weeks, depending on tumor type, location, and depth. Dr. Rapaport will create a schedule tailored specifically to you.

How long do results last after GentleCure®?

The results are long-term. Once treatment is complete and imaging shows no remaining tumor, recurrence at the treated site is rare. Routine follow-ups are recommended.

Does the treatment hurt?

No. Most patients describe the experience as completely painless, similar to getting an ultrasound. There’s no cutting, anesthesia, or needles involved.

Will there be any side effects or visible changes to my skin?

You may notice temporary redness, peeling, or pigment changes at the treatment site. However, GentleCure® is known for superior cosmetic outcomes compared to surgery.

Can SRT be used for recurrent skin cancers?

Yes, in many cases. GentleCure® can be effective for treating primary and recurrent basal or squamous cell carcinomas, even when surgery has been performed previously.

What if I can’t afford the treatment?

GentleCure® is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Dr. Rapaport’s office will verify your coverage and help you understand out-of-pocket costs. Payment assistance may be available for eligible patients.
